MeraSifnos
Mera’s twelve limewashed suites stepping down the cliff above a small bay on the north coast of Sifnos, late afternoon

Twelve suites on the cliff above a small bay on Sifnos. Open from 15 May to 15 October.

The house

The house

Eleni’s grandfather fired clay pots on this cliff for forty years. His kiln still stands at the end of the path, and its dome now covers our largest suite.

In 2021 we rebuilt the house he left as twelve suites in limewash and local stone, laid floor tiles made in the workshops at Cheronissos ten minutes down the road, and turned every bed so that you wake up facing the water. Linen dries on the terrace wall in an hour.

Sifnos

Sifnos is a small island in the western Cyclades. Greeks know it for its potters and its cooks. Mera sits on the quiet north coast, above a bay you reach by 140 stone steps, and when your ferry ties up at Kamares one of us will be on the quay with the car, a bottle of cold water and a fair guess at when the wind will drop.

Evenings

Hands lifting the lid of a clay pot of slow-baked chickpeas on an olive wood table
Revithada, out of the wood oven at one on Sunday

Froso grew up in Apollonia and cooks what her mother cooked. On Saturday night she seals chickpeas in a clay pot and leaves them in the wood oven until Sunday lunch. That is revithada. Ask for a place at the table on your first day.

The sea-water pool stays lit until midnight. Drinks come from a small bar set into the wall, and plenty of guests take their last swim after dark, when the water still holds the heat of the day and the only lights on the bay belong to the fishing boats leaving Cheronissos.

  • Dinner from 20:00, one menu€58 a guest
  • Revithada on Sundaysfrom 13:00
  • Sea-water poollit until midnight

I grew up running down those steps to the bay. Tell me when you are coming and I will have the boat ready.
